Firestorm hits rebel-held Salaheddin in Aleppo

Dawn in the Salaheddin district of Syria's second city Aleppo brought a firestorm with four buildings quickly set ablaze as rebels and foreign fighters battled a long-anticipated army offensive.

"It started at 4:00 am (1:00 GMT) and eight hours later it's still hell. This is madness," an AFP correspondent reported on Saturday.

Four helicopters launched salvoes of rockets before the rebel-held district, which has been surrounded by President Bashar al-Assad's forces, was bombarded by artillery and tanks.

Families fled the fighting, clutching jars of preserves and bottles of milk and water amid food shortages.

Three women sheltering in a Salaheddin basement were all armed with small pistols.

"I would choose death rather than be attacked by the regime soldiers," said one.

Many panic-stricken women and children have fled the quarter since Friday for other parts of the city, leaving behind only groups of men.

The opposition fighting against regime forces includes both Syrian rebels and foreign fighters, who said they belonged to the Liwa al-Tawhid al-Mujahedeen (United Mujahedeen Brigade).

The foreigners told AFP they hailed from from Chechnya, Algeria, Sweden and France. When the correspondent was about to pass the phone to a French fighter, the line went dead.

An attack on the Hamdaniyeh district, where the correspondent was stationed, was repelled.

On the road were three tanks and two armoured vehicles destroyed by the opposition, as well as the bodies of five or six soldiers and four rebels.

A senior Free Syrian Army colonel, Abdel Jabbar al-Oqaidi, told AFP that 100 tanks were massed on the outskirts of Salaheddin.

In the large district in the southwest of the city, rebels had mounted a machinegun on a red pick-up truck with the words "United Mujahedeen Brigade" spray-painted on its side.

A video posted online by activists shows them shooting frantically at the helicopter gunships above, spurred on by the rallying cries of other rebels in the street.

Another video shows flames licking from a building as gunfire crackles in the background and verses from the Koran can be heard from a nearby mosque.

Women and children have been evacuating the Salaheddin area since Friday, seeking refuge in other areas of the city. Those residents who have opted to stay behind have sought refuge in the basements of houses.

According to the AFP correspondent, there is no electricity and water in the city, and food stocks are so low that it is nearly impossible to find bread supplies.

"There are thousands of people in the streets fleeing the bombardment. They're being terrorised by helicopter gunships flying at low altitude," said one activist who identified himself as Amer.

"There's a large number of civilians who have taken refuge in public parks in safer areas, but most took refuge in schools," he told AFP via Skype.

"They cannot get out of town and there is no safe place left for them in Syria," he added.

Until recently, both Aleppo and the capital Damascus had been considered to be relative safe havens.

A Syrian security source told AFP: "Hotspots have been completely blocked off to stop the terrorists from escaping," the term the regime uses when it refers to the rebels.

One militant suggested that regime forces were resorting to subterfuge.

"Some soldiers are passing themselves off as rebels, and putting up checkpoints with the rebel flag to trap fighters taking supplies between secure areas and 'hot' districts," he said.

Japanese researchers are building a human-like robotic swimmer that could help athletes swim faster, or at least wear speedier swimsuits.

Among other things, the Swumanoid will give researchers insight into the propulsive force created by a swimmer?s hands, which is difficult to gauge with sensors on an actual human, Motomu Nakashima from the Tokyo Institute of Technology told the video news website Diginfo TV.?

The robot is modeled after a competitive swimmer, built to half scale. Waterproof motors reproduce swimming motions. It currently swims about three times slower than the?current 100-meter freestyle record-holder,?Brazilian Cesar Cielo.?

Nakashima said the robot will find use in sports research. It might also serve as a rescue robot. Given other developments on the robot lifeguard front, it?s beginning to look like a favorite summer job is about to be automated.

Abbotsford woman rescues Desi dogs from India

The street pup was screaming, making a racket at the busy Indian market. Some kids scooped him up using a newspaper, and were going to throw him off a nearby cliff.

Barbara Gard, a teacher working in India, convinced them to give her the little dog. She managed to bring it back with her to Canada, and now Francis is the grey-muzzled patriarch of a small group of Indian street dogs Gard has at her hobby kennel on Sumas Mountain.

He was the first of some 200 dogs she has rescued from India, where street dogs, or Desi dogs, often live miserable lives. They are often thought of as vermin, carriers of disease and parasites, and in some regions are afflicted with rabies. Authorities round them up when they become a nuisance. The best these dogs can hope for is to be snared by a wire noose on a stick and thrown into a crowded kennel. At worst, they are killed by workers employing a three-pronged spear.

Each of her dogs has a story. One was part of a litter of pups that was being stoned to death by the security guards at a university, but students managed to save a few pups. Another was living at the garbage dump. And one was in a litter that the mother had underneath a car. When the car moved, it was injured.

What makes their plight more tragic to Gard is her love of the breed. She bred border collies and trained them for sheep dog trials for 17 years. As intelligent as that breed is, she is more impressed by the Desis. They learn more quickly, and are incredible athletes. They are calm indoors, but a deep chest and a ?whippety? build give them great energy for the outdoors. While all native North American dogs are gone, this is a heritage breed, as old as India.

The experience with Francis taught her that travellers can bring home a pet to Canada, provided they have vaccinations and health records, which requires the services of a good vet.

Gard brings dogs to Canada through the non-profit AAIDD (Adopt An Indian Desi Dog). She is partnered with a veterinarian in Delhi, and they select dogs that are simply not going to make it unless they are adopted, and which will make good pets. They are treated and given all their shots before they can board a plane.

With More Fresh Water than the US and Canada Combined Brazil Hasn't Learned to Share Its Treasure

From the Texas Oil Boom to the Deepwater Horizon tragedy, petroleum was undoubtedly the most notorious liquid of the last one hundred years.? While some in the international marketplace still fixate on oil, recent political and environmental developments have helped nominate a stunning rival to oil's supposed predominance: water!?

It's a substance to which Plato gave highest praise: "Only what is rare is valuable, and water, which is the best of all things...is the cheapest."[1] However, in our time, water has become much rarer, or, in economic terms, more scarce than oil.?

In the words of James Bond's latest nemesis, Dominic Greene, "This [water] is the most valuable resource in the world and we need to control as much of it as we can."[2] Global water resources have begun to dry up, even as water trading profitability increases.? Although this situation may seem irrelevant for those with adequate water access, it truly could presage a global water catastrophe.

This predicament has not gone unrecognized by international bodies like the United Nations.? In July 2010, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 64/292, which "Recognizes the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of life and all human rights..."[3].?

This document is legally binding, and could serve as a key precedent for multilateral water management.? Furthermore, most observers have interpreted the resolution as supporting public water rights [4].?

On the other side of the spectrum, litigation like Sunbelt Water's Chapter 11 NAFTA claim [5] and Canada's parliamentary Bill S-11 [6] have raised concerns that potential water privatization will result in irreversible water commodification, confirming the private sector's primacy over the public.

Canada's massive glaciers, rivers, and lakes have afforded it with 7% of the world's renewable fresh water [7].? This abundance has led to a relaxed national perspective on water use: Canadian daily water consumption per capita, about 4,400 liters [8], is currently the highest in the world behind the United States, with both a lack of adequate water utilities regulation and reckless industrial water use the culprits.?

Lines have been drawn in the taiga, and a number of organizations have sprung up throughout the country to take a stand on the issue.? One front in this international hydro-scuffle is dominated by private firms and the Canadian government, while the opposition consists mainly of environmentalist and civic action bodies.

Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's administration has consistently opposed UN initiatives to define water as a human right.? At a 2008 UN Human Rights Council, the Canadian delegation blocked a move by Spain and Germany to officially recognize water and sanitation as human rights [8].?

Canada had previously opposed two UN attempts to elevate water to human right status in 2002 and 2006 [8].? Additionally, the Harper government has tended to encourage privatization as a solution to mismanagement and inefficiency within Canada's system of water utilities.?

The aforementioned Bill S-11, introduced by the Conservatives, tacitly endorses water privatization by mandating clean water access for Canada's First Nation communities (which is severely lacking) without allocating project funding or financial responsibility to any government regulatory bodies [6, 8].?

Furthermore, the bill's subsection 4 (1)(c)(iii) states that "regulations may confer on any person or body the power, exercisable in specified circumstances and subject to specified conditions, to require a First Nation to enter into an agreement for the management of its drinking water system or waste water system in cooperation with a third party."[6]

This clause could force a First Nation community to accept a government-sponsored contract allowing a private firm to supply and purify that community's water.

The danger of this silent privatization is among the chief concerns of the Council of Canadians, one of the primary dissenting voices in the Canada's water debate.? The Council believes that Harper's corporatizing water policy will jeopardize Canada's right to self-determination of its own water supply [6].?

Sunbelt Water's aborted Chapter 11 litigation has demonstrated that once a firm gains water rights in state party to the NAFTA, that state's federal government cannot dissolve those rights without compensating that firm for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages [6].?

In the absence of this costly reacquisition of water rights, any private corporation could engage in bulk water exports, shipping huge volumes of water from the country without accountability to the public; in essence, the firm would be 'harvesting' national water resources and selling them on the international market.?

This is, of course, how corn, iron ore, and other commodities are sold.? The question here is whether a public good should be allowed to become a private benefit without the full consent of the state.

A quick glance at the rest of the hemisphere can provide further insight into the status of water policy.? The United States, Canada's thirstiest client, has water rights issues of its own.? The country's water infrastructure is managed by an eclectic patchwork of private and public water utilities.?

Some cities' water authorities, such as Portland's (a public entity) [9], are considered to be more on the sustainable side, but many such organizations are careless when it comes to conserving water.? While desert agriculture and cities like Las Vegas and Phoenix in the American Southwest rely on water imports for sustenance, U.S. water providers look further and further afield for viable water supplies.?

Under the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP), one of the constituent NAFTA pacts among the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, U.S. water utilities both public and private can obtain a virtually unlimited amount of Canadian water through artificial river diversion [10].? While U.S. renewable freshwater resources are nowhere near Canada's 7% world share, every year Americans consume more water per capita than any other nation in the world [11].

Commercial water use also plays a significant role in America's ravenous water appetite.? Extensive agricultural projects in the Midwest depend on the Ogallala Aquifer, a vast subterranean water table concentrated in Nebraska and the surrounding states; in fact 30% of all water used for irrigation in the U.S. comes from the aquifer [12].?

The aquifer would take 35 years to replenish its stores to original levels in the absence of water consumption [12].? It is impossible to know exactly when the aquifer will be depleted, but when its wells run dry, the United States agricultural system may well collapse in lieu of an alternative water source.?

The country's vast monetary wealth has allowed it to avert any major water disasters so far, but merely buying more water from neighboring Canada is both financially and environmentally unsustainable.? Not only that, but such bulk importation of water will inevitably lead to its commodification and leave it vulnerable to the whims of irresponsible speculators.?

Fluctuations in oil prices have plagued worldwide economic health in the past, but a scenario in which water - necessary to human life - is bought and sold by faceless investors is unfathomably disturbing.

Turning south, the condition of Brazilian water management provides a different glimpse at the future of regional and global water policy.? Largely thanks to the Amazon River, Brazil's annual volume of renewable freshwater is more than that of the United States and Canada combined [7]; however, the distribution of water is inequitable, as the northeast suffers chronic droughts while the southeastern region typically has an embarrassment of water riches.?

One government after another has made efforts to address the capricious but economically compelling topic of Brazilian water resources.? As early as 1934, the Brazilian Water Code sought to secure government control of Brazil's waterways for hydroelectric projects [13].? This early doctrine set a precedent of a public, rather than private, system for water management.

In 1997, President Fernando Henrique Cardoso used this precedent to boost social and humanitarian water projects.? The National Environmental Policy Act of 1981 and the Federal Constitution of 1988 had previously recognized the environmental value of sustainable public water use [14], and Cardoso's initiative solidified water's resistance to private acquisition.?

In one of history's most radical water policy decisions, Cardoso's National Water Act of 1997 categorically defined all Brazilian waters as public property [15].? As a result, Brazil has both abundant renewable freshwater resources and the administrative ability to control them.?

It is unlikely that the Brazilian government would accept any move to privatize water, and current President Dilma Rousseff's populist stance suggests that water commodification has no place in Brazil for the time being.?

There are still many inefficiencies within this nascent system; for example, poor water access in key agricultural states like Pernambuco and Para?ba leave the northeastern region vulnerable to unpredictable droughts [16].? The future of Brazilian water policy lies in expanded access and more workable distribution methods.

This evaluation of hemispheric hydro-policy in three of the world's largest producers and consumers of water indicates a looming battle between private and public for control over the world's most precious resource.?

One of the most contentious issues prompted by this conflict is total water commodification, although that is unlikely to occur without extensive water privatization.? While privatization registers slow but steady progress in the United States and Canada, the Brazilian government maintains a firm grip on the South American giant's water supply.?

Each of these systems is viable (although not perfect), for now.? Examination of the past failures and successes of privatization in Bolivia and Chile demonstrates the merits of some forms of private water, while confirming that total water privatization can have disastrous consequences.?

Both systems aspire to provide the highest water quality, the most expansive access, and the least amount of waste, and each nation has its own perspective on which water distribution system truly embodies these ideals.?

However, the time has come for water enthusiasts (i.e., humanity) to take a stand; policymakers must make bolder decisions when it comes to our pluvial resources.

Chronic world water shortages and the UN designation of water as a human right could soon force aqua-giants like Canada, Brazil, and the U.S. to adopt more decisive, sustainable, and internationally engaged roles in managing their water.

Intelligent car takes the wheel to dodge trouble

A new intelligent navigation system could keep your car on the road and away from obstacles even when you're not paying attention.

Sterling Anderson and Karl Iagnemma of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Robotic Mobility Group have developed an "intelligent co-pilot" that uses an onboard camera and laser rangefinder to identify hazards in a vehicle's environment.

The system identifies obstacles in the path of the vehicle and charts the best course around them. It returns control to the human operator once it decides that car and driver are safely out of harm's way.

The system can drive a car completely on its own, but Anderson says the genius of his robotic co-pilot is its ability to seamlessly share control with its flesh-and-blood counterpart behind the wheel.

"Full autonomy is simpler than enabling a car to collaborate with a human," Anderson says. "In this system, we have to accommodate for the human's input as well, making sure that the automated system kicks in only in dangerous situations."

Anderson says if a driver didn't know their car was equipped with the system, they would probably think they had pulled off a spectacular feat behind the wheel.

Researchers have tested the system with a variety of vehicles, ranging from a remote-controlled utility buggy to a Type S Jaguar at Ford's track in Dearborn, Michigan. So far, it works up to speeds of 48 kilometres per hour.

The next step in the research is tailoring the system to a driver's ability. "We want this to be useful for the beginning driver and the guys who like the smell of octane and burning rubber," Anderson says.

Anderson says he would put the system between $5000 and $10,000 when it hits the market. This won't be for some time, though, he added - five years at the least. The group presented details of the safety system at the 2012 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium in Madrid, Spain.

Many more elderly people could benefit from drugs to prevent heart disease

ScienceDaily (July 12, 2012) ? More patients aged 75 and over should be prescribed drugs to help lower their risk of cardiovascular disease, a study recently published on the British Medical Journal website.

The researchers argue that older people are being "largely ignored" by current guidance, yet as the population ages, greater use of these drugs could reduce disability and prolong healthy life expectancy.

Cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart attack and heart failure are the principal cause of death in the UK and around the world. Drugs that help to lower blood pressure (antihypertensives) and cholesterol levels (statins) are safe and effective, yet current guidelines for preventing cardiovascular disease focus only on people aged 40-74 years.

Previous studies focusing on patients with existing cardiovascular disease have also found that patients are less likely to receive preventative treatment the older they get, despite the fact that the risk of developing cardiovascular disease increases with age.

So a team of researchers from the University of Birmingham and the University of Oxford studied 36,679 patients aged 40 and over from 19 general practices in the West Midlands, to establish whether age and sex impact on prescriptions for antihypertensives and statins. None of the patients had a history of cardiovascular disease at the start of the study.

Results show that the likelihood of using antihypertensive medication increased with every five years but started to decline after the age of 85. Patients aged 75 and over had the highest use overall (56%) and women were 10% more likely to be taking antihypertensives than men.

The likelihood of using statin medication also increased with every five years but decreased with every five years after the age of 75, although 23% of all patients aged 75 and over were taking statins. Those aged 70-74 had the highest use. Women aged between 65-69 and 75-79 were 5% more likely to be issued a prescription than men whilst men under the age of 60 were more likely to be issued a prescription.

A 2008 study has shown that antihypertensive treatment in those over 80 can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The evidence for statin treatment in the elderly is less clear because trials have not been conducted in this population, but the authors say that there is no evidence to suggest that prescribing statins in elderly patients causes any harm.

The authors conclude that the older population should not be ignored when prescribing drugs to prevent cardiovascular disease. They suggest that guidelines should be modified and future research should look at the use of statin therapy in people aged 80 or more and that treating those aged 75 and over with these drugs "could be an appropriate place to start."

I have always loved ice cream, even after working at Carvel for a year in high school. The first day on the job, the owner said to eat as much ice cream as I wanted, because everyone got sick of it after a few weeks. Guess he didn?t know me very well.

I ate as much ice cream on the last day on the job as on the first, and my love affair with ice cream continues to this day.

These days my interest in ice cream is more about quality than quantity, and there is no better quality ice cream in New York from a truck or store than Coolhaus.

Coolhaus began in L.A. back in April 2009. After opening in Austin, Coolhaus opened a truck here in New York in April 2011.

Since then, they opened a second truck here, as well as a cart on Central Park West & 80th St, across from the American Museum of Natural History.

Coolhaus is all about ice cream sandwiches (or ?sammies? as they call them). When you order, you choose a cookie for the sandwich ? and there are some pretty interesting ones.

The ice cream gets even more creative than the cookies. How about beer & pretzels, Cuban cigar or Peking duck ice cream? I went to the cart wanting to try their fried chicken & waffles ice cream, but they only had it at the truck. Don?t worry, you can get normal ice cream flavors there too.

I enjoy the combination of sweet and spicy, so I ordered chocolate chipotle ice cream and got it on snickerdoodle cookies.

Licking the ice cream first, it was a deep, rich chocolate with the flavor of the spicy chipotle pepper coming through clearly. A sweet and spicy dessert that?s also cold is a very interesting sensation, and I mean that in the best way possible. My favorite type of chocolate is dark, and this tasted much closer to dark than milk chocolate.

There was another flavor I couldn?t decipher at first, but then it came to me: bourbon. This is ice cream for adults, and a bunch of their flavors have alcohol involved (gin & tonic, Guinness chip, spiked egg nog). It?s not enough to catch a buzz, but I definitely tasted a little bourbon in the ice cream.

The snickerdoodle cookies were hard enough to hold the ice cream, but soft enough to bite through so the ice cream didn?t squeeze out of the sides. They also added cinnamon and vanilla to each bite, which were perfect with spicy chocolate.

Another interesting thing about Coolhaus is they give you an edible paper wrapper to hold the sammie. It doesn?t really taste like anything, but when you take a bite, you don?t have to worry about getting a napkin out of the way. It just makes things easier.

Great quality like this doesn?t come cheap. An ice cream sandwich is $6, which is expensive for a sammie, but you get fantastic ice cream and two large, delicious cookies. I think it?s worth the money, but you?re always willing to spend a little more on the ones you love. Based on the steady expansion of Coolhaus around the country, we ?re obviously not the only ones who feel that way.
