Spring is here and your pets will be interacting more with the outdoors now that the weather is warming up. Warmer days mean more trips to the dog park, hikes, and longer walks at night as the sun sets later in the day.

Here?s a few tips to help them prepare for the change of seasons:

1: Brush your cat. A thorough brushing a few times a week will go a long way to curb shedding around the house and cut down on the chance of a gross hairball on your floor. Cats with long coats may need a de-matting tool as well. If your cat tolerates it, you may even try a bath to help remove the dead fur, condition their skin, and clean off any debris. Just remember, make sure to dry them well, and if your cat won?t tolerate the water, don?t push it.

2: Check that the houseplants aren?t poisonous to your pets. Cats and dogs sometimes chew or nibble plants. Some cats dig in the pots and toss dirt everywhere. If you have pets that think the plants are their ?tiny? garden, consider hanging plants or moving them where your pets can?t access them. If the plants you have are poisonous and can make your pet ill, see if your friends want them and replace them with safer species.

3: As you begin spring cleaning the house, garage, and attic be mindful of the cleaners you have in your house. Some may leave a residue behind that can harm your pets. Check the labels and keep your pets away from the newly mopped and cleaned rooms till everything is completely dry and the chemicals used are put away.

4: When removing the insulation from the windows, check the screens for holes and tears. A cat may lean against the screen and end up outside. You also don?t want flies and other bugs getting into your house. Repair any weak spots in your windows and if your cat loves to perch on the windowsill, think about getting a cat tree with multi shelves that can be placed near the window or a cat shelf that is like a hammock for cats.

5: If you use some pesticides in the house and in your yard, check the labels and think about changing brands to safer ones for the environment and your pets and children. Some types are fatal if your pet ingests them and others may cause extreme sickness. There are green ways to keep pests at bay such as using peppermint oil to repel ants and citronella to repel mosquitos.

Much has been said and written about the ?horrors? of in house dealer financing of automobile loans. Actually determining the best way to go about financing your next car is a bit more involved. In some circumstances, in house financing auto loans are a very good deal, primarily for those with good, very good or excellent credit. Both the auto dealers and the new car manufacturers know that the limited amount of good and excellent credit available for auto loan financing is very limited and they want as much of it as they can get. So for those with very good credit, they bend over backwards to make sure their auto loan financing is as competitive as possible.

As one moves down the credit spectrum into good to poor to bad, the story begins to change. The average auto finance firm expects most of its business to be poor credit but good enough to pay the loan and not require the car be reprocessed. For an auto finance company this is a great business model. It allows them to charge high interest rates with only a reasonable amount of risk. At high rates they do not even have to finance a lot of cars to have a very viable business. It is in this ?gray area? that many of today?s auto buyers find themselves.

For those credit challenged with bad credit, normally the last option and lowest place on the totem pole is ?buy here pay here?. In this circumstance the seller actually counts on having to reprocess the car. They realize the credit starved buyer has little or no options so they start by inflating the price of the car. For example a car that may sell on the used car lot of a franchised dealer for $10,000 will easily be $15,000 at a buy here pay here. Often they also require the buyer to put money down and, at the same time, charge the highest interest rates that are legal. Caught up in this set of variables, the buy here pay here dealer does not expect the buyer to pay on the car for too long. They reprocess the car and just sell it again in the same scenario.

If you are one of the millions of Americans who have to look at auto loans for bad credit, the place to start is not even at the auto finance company and certainly not at the buy here pay here dealer. By far the best place to start is the internet. In the privacy of your home you can compare the rates and offers of multiple outlets without ever leaving home. You will be able to determine what your credit will be able to finance and can often get your financing approved over the phone. This way, you are in control and understand what you are getting into.

The construction industry is leading business confidence higher in the latest National Bank Business Outlook survey, reflecting expectations of the Christchurch rebuild kicking into life.

However, the bank?s chief economist Cameron Bagrie warns the improving sentiment is not occurring throughout the economy, with export commodity prices still weakening and the government?s belt-tightening keeping consumers? wallets locked away.

Nonetheless, a net 34 percent of businesses expect better times in the year ahead, up six percentage points from the February survey, and sentiment is even stronger when firms are asked what they expect for their own businesses.

A net 39 percent of the 421 firms nationwide which responded to the monthly survey say the year ahead looks better for their own enterprise, up eight points on last month to a 7-month high.

Employment, investment and profit expectations were also on the rise, although Bagrie warned there could be an element of current optimism being based on the expectation that ?it surely can?t get any worse??

?The process of balance sheet repair has further to run. Commodity prices are easing. Tighter fiscal policy will take more money out of our pockets than we get back,? he said, but there were rays of sunshine among the challenges with agricultural output up strongly after a good growing season, higher property prices and ?a lot? of improvement in the global economy, at least for now.

The latest survey showed New Zealand was ?moving in the right direction, but with a sting in the tail,? said Bagrie. ?Improvements are being led by housing and construction. It?s growth, so we?ll take it, but with the current account deficit at 4 percent of gross domestic product and net external liability position at 72 percent of GDP, the housing market can only get us so far.?

James Montier Applies Behavioral Finance to Value Investing | CFA ...

James Montier, a member of the asset allocation team at GMO UK Ltd., routinely challenges the market?s consensus with his white papers and research reports. As he writes in ?What Goes Up Must Come Down!,? his March 2012 white paper for GMO,??the Wall Street consensus has a pretty good record of being completely and utterly wrong.? Montier points out the shortcomings of Wall Street?s sentiments by applying behavioral finance from a value investor?s perspective to explain the quirks of human behavior that cause money managers and investors to ignore warning signs, overvalue bad investments, and participate in herd mentality.

Montier has been cited by a number of media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal?s MarketBeat blog, which noted that ?Montier?s truly got a way with words.? His most recent GMO white paper has received media attention because of its analysis of unusual profit margins reported by U.S. companies. Not only are these profit margins at record highs, writes Montier, but ?more freakish still is that these record high profit margins are coming during the weakest economic recovery in post-war history.?

Kinect boss on the future of computer interfaces

Andrew Blake is managing director of Microsoft Research Cambridge, the UK lab responsible for building the motion-sensing Kinect camera. New Scientist caught up with him at The Economist's Technology Frontiers conference last week to discuss his vision for the future of computer interfaces ? and how, one day, we might all think like Meryl Streep.

How have computer interfaces evolved over time?
We've been through three generations of how we interact with computers. Green screen and cursor and keyboard was first, then we had mouse and Windows, followed by touch and multi-touch, and now it looks like we may be getting a fourth generation which is no touch, or action at a distance. Kinect is a piece of this, but there's really a lot of technology coming up from other labs.

So what's next for Kinect? It has made it into millions of gamers' homes and is constantly being tinkered with by hobbyists and researchers, but will it ever have more serious uses?
It's only in millions of homes ? I'd love to see it in hundreds of millions of homes. I do think the real potential of the technology is how it changes the way we think about interfacing with machines of all kinds, and I think we're absolutely at the beginning of that. It's as if we are at the stage where somebody has just found out what metal film you could use to make a touchscreen, and now some creative people have got touchscreens and they're beginning to play with them.

Will we eventually all be like Tom Cruise in Minority Report, waving our arms around at our desk?
I don't know if we ever knew what Tom Cruise was really doing, he was waving his hands and videos were moving around and they were trying to sell you the line that he was sort of composing pieces of information in this very intelligent way, but I'm not sure that's really what was happening.

I find that vision somehow not quite right, but something not very far from it would be giving a presentation. I probably would like a good PowerPoint user interface where you're almost talking or signalling to the projector and it's your "apprentice" ? I think that notion of an apprentice is important.

Newer interface generations won't replace the mouse and keyboard then?
There's no reason why they should, the number of modalities that we have to play with now is expanding. Something that humans seem to be very good at is using parallel channels, but have we really exploited that with a computer? I think Kinect is bringing in a very important extra parallel channel but it's not the only one.

People will still be at their workstations with keyboard and mouse, the mouse is a wonderful precision instrument when you have to do that kind of work, but it's not so natural for other things. If you don't want to be concentrating quite so closely you may like to be more approximate, and I think that's what people love about the modern, multi-touch paradigm. It's sort of more relaxed and when you're in that kind of mood that's a nice way to interact.

Using exotic interfaces such as gesture or voice commands can be a bit embarrassing though, do social norms need to change for these interfaces to really take off?
We used to think that people who wandered in the street, with earphones in their ears, talking to nobody were nutters. Now we realise they're just on the phone. It doesn't seem so odd anymore. So, I think things that give you enough leverage stand a chance of becoming social norms.

And what's next, once those become the norm?
If I knew what the fifth generation was I wouldn't be sitting here! Brain-computer interfaces are amazing, let's see how well they can be made to work. For the best ones, of course, you need an implant, but if non-contact brain-computer interfaces get better that would be marvellous.

What would be the killer app of a thought-controlled computer?
Thought control might be at its best when we are wandering around the street. As we said, it's already acceptable to have ear phones plugged into your head, but if I want to find my way through the city I'm going to look a bit of wally chatting about where I want to go. If I could replace that by thinking, great.

Even more so, there's what I think of as a The Devil Wears Prada scenario. Meryl Streep is at a party and wants to network but she can't actually remember everybody's name, so her two lovely assistants have memorised an entire album full of faces and biographies. Whenever someone comes up they whisper to her who it is, so she goes "Oh, darling, John!" as if she knew who it was. If I could have that in my phone, it would be fantastic.

People With Autism May Be Better at Processing ... - Health News

MONDAY, March 26 (HealthDay News) ? People with autism have an enhanced ability to process information, which may explain the apparently higher-than-average percentage of people with autism who work in the information technology industry, British researchers say.

Along with this heightened capacity for processing information, people with autism are better able to detect information that is considered critical, according to the study, which appeared March 22 in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology.

Autism spectrum disorders include a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, all marked by difficulties with social and communication skills and repetitive behaviors.

People with autism have an increased ability to focus on certain tasks, but are also easily distracted by things such as flashing lights or particular sounds, it has been thought.

A University College London (UCL) researcher wondered if these conflicting characteristics might be due to a higher-than-normal ability to process information.

?Our work on perceptual capacity in the typical adult brain suggests a clear explanation for the unique cognitive profile that people with autism show,? Nilli Lavie, a professor at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL, said in a Wellcome Trust news release.

?People who have higher perceptual capacity are able to process more information from a scene, but this may also include some irrelevant information that they may find harder to ignore,? she said. ?Our research suggests autism does not involve a distractibility deficit but rather an information-processing advantage.?

Lavie and her colleagues tested the theory by giving 16 adults with autism and 16 adults without autism a task designed to assess their ?perceptual load capacity.? Both groups were successful at the task in the easier initial stages, but the adults with autism significantly outperformed those without autism as the task became more difficult.

?Our study confirms our hypothesis that people with autism have higher perceptual capacity compared to the typical population,? Lavie said. ?This can only be seen once the task becomes more demanding, with more information to process. In the more challenging task conditions, people with autism are able to perceive significantly more information than the typical adult.?

Lavie said the findings may help explain why people with autism spectrum disorders, such as Asperger?s syndrome, may excel in information technology and other careers that require intense concentration and the ability to process large amounts of information from a computer screen.

End-of-quarter splurge could help lift market

Portfolio managers will be doing some last-minute shopping for winners from the big stock market rally as they take part next week in the quarter-end ritual of window dressing.

The activity could help stocks resume their upward course in the week ahead and keep a long-expected pullback at bay.

The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 11.1 percent so far for the first quarter and the year. That would follow a gain of 11.2 percent for the fourth quarter.

If the trend holds, the S&P 500 will book its best back-to-back quarters since the second and third quarters of 2009.

The S&P 500 lost some ground in the past week, ending down 0.5 percent after five straight weeks of gains, but that's only its second negative week for the year.

Much of the quarter's gains have been driven by signs of improvement in the economy, particularly a pickup in jobs, which has been lagging other areas in the recovery.

Window dressing typically involves investors grabbing some of the quarter's best performers to dress up their portfolio listings.

Some of the last-minute buying is likely to come from the hedge fund community, said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist and senior portfolio manager for Federal Global Investment Management Corp in New York.

Hedge funds "by and large have not been believers about the improvement in the domestic economy ... so they've been very much out of the market. Yet here we are with the first quarter looking like the best first quarter since 1998," he said. "They've got a huge gain to catch up."

But retail investors, he said, have probably also noticed that they've missed a lot by having kept their money in Treasuries and other fixed-income assets over the quarter.

"They have woken up to the realization that the surge in yields has resulted in a significant loss of capital for them," Orlando said.

If the S&P 500 manages to end the first quarter with an 11.1 percent gain, that would be its best quarterly performance since the second quarter of 2009.

By comparison, the 10-year U.S. Treasury note's yield has risen nearly 36 basis points. If this holds, the 10-year note's yield will record a quarterly rise for the first time in a year.

In the final week of the first quarter, Wall Street will get a more complete look at the economy through a whole suite of indicators. Among them will be March consumer confidence on Tuesday, February durable goods orders on Wednesday, the final look at fourth-quarter Gross Domestic Product on Thursday, plus February personal income and spending data on Friday as well as the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index, and the final reading on March consumer sentiment from the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan surveys.

"The bottom line is: The economy is improving and while inflation is trending higher, there is no threat of corporate profits disintegrating," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

"I am looking for a rally," he said.

Gains this quarter have been broad-based, with most of the 10 S&P sectors on track to end the quarter in positive territory.

But the S&P 500 financial sector index and the S&P technology sector index stand out, with gains so far of 21 percent for the financials and 19.9 percent for techs. The more defensive S&P 500 utility and consumer staples sectors have underperformed, with the utility index down 3.9 percent and the consumer staples index up 3.7 percent so far.

Still, the S&P energy sector, a cycical sector that tends to gain with the economy like financials and technology, is up just 4 percent for the quarter so far.

Because of the S&P 500's big move this quarter, some strategists expect to see some funds shift out of equities.

"Given the fact that stocks have had a big move and bonds have sold off, portfolio managers in asset-allocation mode may trim a little bit of equity holdings and move them into fixed-income holdings to rebalance target weights," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist of D.A. Davidson & Co. in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

According to Thomson Reuters' Lipper service, investors in U.S.-domiciled equity funds have splurged so far in the first quarter of the year, pumping a net $32.7 billion in fresh capital into the sector.

This follows net outflows for the previous nine-month period, which saw a high of $66 billion in net redemptions occur in the second quarter of 2011. For all of last year, equity funds experienced net outflows of $50.4 billion, only the second full year of redemptions since Lipper started tracking fund flow data in 1992.

The S&P 500 ended 2011 virtually unchanged, but is up 23 percent since the end of September.

Even as money has moved back into equities, taxable bond funds are also enjoying a banner start to the year.

Lipper data shows $85 billion in net inflows so far in 2012, on pace to be the best since the $98 billion of net inflows recorded in the first quarter of 2010.

Taxable bond funds have not had a negative quarter since the fourth quarter of 2008. The record inflow year for this category was 2009 when investors bought an additional $384 billion of taxable bond funds. The last full year of net outflows was the $54 billion in 2000.

Stocks have benefitted not just from the upbeat economic data, but from speculation that the Federal Reserve could add further stimulus to the economy.

"What may have driven some of this sustained support for the market is continued indications from the Fed that QE3 is not out of the question. That would certainly be extremely negative for anybody who has a short position on U.S. equities," said Natalie Trunow, chief investment officer of equities at Calvert Investment Management in Bethesda, Maryland.

A genetic pathway previously known for its role in embryonic development and cancer has been identified as a target for systemic sclerosis, or scleroderma, therapy. The finding, discovered by a cross-disciplinary team led by John Varga, MD, John and Nancy Hughes Distinguished Professor of Rheumatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, was recently published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism.

"We showed, for the first time, that the Wnt signaling pathway is abnormally activated in scleroderma patients," said Varga, who is also a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "This is significant for three reasons. First, it gives a better picture of scleroderma and fibrosis in general. Second, it provides a strategy for assessing disease severity, progression, and activity. And third, it opens a door for the design of treatments that aim to block the Wnt pathway and restore its normal controlled activity."

Varga's laboratory collaborated with a pulmonary team at Northwestern, along with teams at Case Western Reserve University and Dartmouth University on the discovery.

Researchers studied skin and lung biopsies from scleroderma patients and found that the Wnt pathway was 'turned on', in contrast to healthy individuals where the pathway was 'turned off.' Varga said this activation may be due to loss of Wnt inhibitors that normally serve as 'brakes' on the pathway to prevent its activation.

The team also examined what the pathway does using fibroblasts and stem cells from healthy people. They found Wnt causes fibroblast activation and blocks the development of fat cells (adipocytes), which directly contribute to scar formation and tissue damage seen in scleroderma.

Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks itself. It causes progressive thickening and tightening (fibrosis) of the skin and also can lead to serious internal organ damage and, in some cases, death. Scleroderma affects an estimated 150,000 people in the United States, most frequently young to middle-aged women.

"Scleroderma is a complex and poorly understood disease with no cure," said Varga. "Our findings suggest that treatments targeting the Wnt signaling pathway could lead to an effective treatment."

Varga said Northwestern researchers next plan to conduct multi-center preclinical studies to evaluate treatments that block the Wnt pathway in animal models and measure Wnt activity in additional scleroderma biopsies to see if it can be clinically useful as a biomarker.

SPSCC's Early Learning and Education Programs: Educating ...

Four years ago, inspiration struck South Puget Sound Community College professor Chris Moon.

?A colleague and I had gone to a parenting talk and we said, we should bring this to our community,? says Moon, who is also the program lead for SPSCC?s Early Learning and Education Programs, which includes Education, Early Childhood Education, and the Parenting Education Program.

Moon and her Parenting Education Program team envisioned bringing parenting information to the wider community through lectures and family events.

Moon and her SPSCC colleagues teach early childhood education and parenting classes, both on-campus ? for parents in the community and enrolled SPSCC students going into the field of teaching ? and through four area cooperative preschools.

?We wanted to promote that parents need to have fun with their kids. Not only do they need information on how to be the best parent they can be, we also wanted them to recognize that having fun with your kids is part of parenting.?

?We also wanted it to be free to the community, with free childcare, and bring in quality speakers,? says Moon. ?And then we wanted to also have one family concert every year.?

Working with Shelly Willis, executive director of Family Education and Support Services, Moon and her Parent Education Program colleagues created the Parenting Tools Lecture Series.

The objective of Parenting Tools is to work as a collaborative effort between Thurston County agencies and groups to provide support to parents through free lectures and family events.

?We want to destigmatize the idea that parents need help,? Moon says. ?We want to offer this information that gives parents a shot in the arm a couple times a year, gives them a night out.?

Different local agencies pulled together money and the Parenting Tools Lecture Series started gathering sponsors. ?It was really, truly a community collaboration,? says Moon.

The organization is now sponsored by more than a dozen local organizations and businesses. ?We couldn?t do it without the generous financial and in-kind support of many sponsors,? says Moon.

The Parenting Tools Lecture Series schedules two lectures per academic year, with the Hands On Children?s Museum and the YMCA providing free on-site childcare.

And for the past four years, Seattle?s popular Recess Monkey has performed to a packed SPSCC theater of dancing children and toe-tapping parents.

The next Parenting Tools Lecture Series event takes place this Wednesday, March 21^st, with best-selling author Ellen Galinsky. Thurston Early Childhood Coalition is a major sponsor of the event.

?We?re really excited to have her, because she?s such a well-known speaker,? Moon says of Galinsky. ?It?s kind of a coup for our community because there?s been a lot of activity in the early childhood world around her information.?

Galinsky is a national best-selling author of Mind in the Making and will speak about the seven essential skills that kids and adults need to be successful.

The seven life skills she identifies as essential to success in school, the workforce, and life, are:

Customer Service Is A Vital Part Of Your Internet Marketing Business ...

I have a story to share with you today about the customer service I received with one of the programs I have used, and the story is not one where I will be mentioning the name of the person(s) or program.

Now if you have read any of my past articles you will know that when it comes to good customer service I will tell you all about the names, programs, products, etc.

When it is poor customer service, well, it?s not that I do not want you to know who or what the internet marketing business
is or does, I simply believe what Mama told me (often), that if you can?t say something nice don?t say anything at all.

And it?s a shame, as I like the person that is my contact and has their name on the program, but as they say ?this is business?.

So here is the example of their customer service:

I Skyped my contact last Friday, and we had a short back and forth where I told of the challenge I was having. I was told that it would be referred to tech support.

Great, look forward to their letting me know what?s up!

Well the following Thursday I sent a Skype message that the next day was a week and I have not heard back from this person or tech support, and this was late evening, so I did not really expect an answer until the next day.

Shortly after I went online the next morning up pops Skype and the question I received was?.

Anybody else get frustrated with this type of service? Ever happened to you?

Next I am told that tech support or I should have followed up, but they got (ready for this) ?busy?!

Well you can guess I?m as happy as a clam, right?

As we continue our conversation I am told everything is working fine on their end, it should be on my end, and, alas, I have to repeat myself that it is not?

Then, finally, I am asked a few pointed questions and abra cadabra we resolve the issue. An issue that if these couple questions had been asked the previous week this could have been resolved back then?

Ok, thanks for reading my rant (that is if you saying to yourself I run into this stuff every day, why should I read about your challenges)?

The points are:
1. I am already a customer and who are the ones that will usually buy again? That?s right current customers, do I want to buy from these folks again, NOT! Why should I? There are others doing pretty much the same thing, I?ll go find ones that will at least follow up, even if they do not resolve it right away, at least they care enough to follow up. Keep in contact with your customers, they are buyers!

2. Know your products and services well enough to ask the right questions, as you will be able to stem many challenges before they even become a challenge.

3. Finally, ask your customer more questions about them, what they think, what they like and what they might not like. Something as simple as that shows that even if you did err you care and are ready to listen, late, but better than not asking.

Be proactive, follow up, what ever it takes, use calendars, journals any kind of tickler, don?t lose the customers you already have because you got ?busy?! Don?t lose a good customer, a buying customer over something that may be so simple to resolve.

You are building a internet marketing business, or any kind of business, and every customer should mean something to you, build that report, get to know your customer, their wants, needs, etc. and you will build a customer for life!
