(AP) ? Emails show Penn State's former president Graham Spanier agreed not to take allegations of sex abuse against ex-assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky to authorities but worried university officials would be "vulnerable" for failing to report it, a news organization has reported.

CNN says the emails, first obtained by and reported on by NBC, followed a graduate assistant's 2001 report of seeing Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in a team locker room shower.

The emails show athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz intended to report the allegation, then reconsidered. Spanier responded that he was "supportive" of their plan, but he worried they might "become vulnerable for not having reported it."

Sandusky was convicted this month of 45 counts of sexually abusing 10 boys. The scandal led to the ouster of Spanier and revered coach Joe Paterno and charges against Curley and Schultz, who are accused of perjury for their grand jury testimony and failing to properly report suspected child abuse. Spanier hasn't been charged.

The CNN report cites an email from Schultz to Curley on Feb. 26, 2001, 16 days after graduate assistant Mike McQueary told veteran coach Joe Paterno about the shower assault. Schultz suggests bringing the allegation to the attention of Sandusky, Sandusky's charity and the Department of Welfare, which investigates suspected child abuse, according to the report.

But the next night, Curley sent an email to Spanier, saying that after thinking about it more and talking to Paterno, he was "uncomfortable" with that plan and wanted to work with Sandusky before contacting authorities, the report said.

If Sandusky is cooperative, Curley's email said, "we would work with him. .... If not, we do not have a choice and will inform the two groups," according to the report.

Spanier wrote back and agreed with that approach, calling it "humane and a reasonable way to proceed," according to the report. But he also worried about the consequences.

"The only downside for us is if message isn't 'heard' and acted upon and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it, but that can be assessed down the road," the email said, according to CNN.

Spanier's attorney didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment Saturday.

Schultz and Curley's lawyers on Saturday echoed recent comments by Gov. Tom Corbett about the need for a solid case before charging Sandusky. Corbett began the investigation in 2009 when he was attorney general.

"For Curley, Schultz, Spanier and Paterno, the responsible and 'humane' thing to do was, like Governor Corbett, to carefully and responsibly assess the best way to handle vague, but troubling allegations," the lawyers said. "Faced with tough situations, good people try to do their best to make the right decisions."

Paterno, ousted by the school's board of trustees for what was called his "failure of leadership" surrounding allegations against Sandusky, died of lung cancer in January. After Sandusky's arrest, Paterno said through a spokesman that he reported the allegation to the head of his department and "that was the last time the matter was brought to my attention until this investigation and I assumed that the men I referred it to handled the matter appropriately."

Schultz, 62, and Curley, 58, deny the allegations and have asked a judge to dismiss the charges. A status conference for their case is scheduled for July 11.

Spanier sued Penn State in May to try to get copies of his email traffic from 1998 to 2004, citing the pending investigation being conducted on the university by former FBI director Louis Freeh. Two weeks ago, lawyers for Penn State asked a judge to throw out the lawsuit and said the attorney general's office, which is prosecuting Curley and Schultz, had asked them not to provide Spanier with the emails.

Abstract: Bioenergy is currently regarded as a renewable energy source with a high growth potential. Forest-based biodiesel, with the significant advantage of not competing with grain production on cultivated land, has been considered as a promising substitute for diesel fuel by many countries, including China. Consequently, extracting biodiesel from Jatropha curcas has become a growing industry. However, many key issues related to the development of this industry are still not fully resolved and the prospects for this industry are complicated. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the net energy, CO2 emission, and cost efficiency of Jatropha biodiesel as a substitute fuel in China to help resolve some of the key issues by studying data from this region of China that is well suited to growing Jatropha. Our results show that: (1) Jatropha biodiesel is preferable for global warming mitigation over diesel fuel in terms of the carbon sink during Jatropha tree growth. (2) The net energy yield of Jatropha biodiesel is much lower than that of fossil fuel, induced by the high energy consumption during Jatropha plantation establishment and the conversion from seed oil to diesel fuel step. Therefore, the energy efficiencies of the production of Jatropha and its conversion to biodiesel need to be improved. (3) Due to current low profit and high risk in the study area, farmers have little incentive to continue or increase Jatropha production. (4) It is necessary to provide more subsidies and preferential policies for Jatropha plantations if this industry is to grow. It is also necessary for local government to set realistic objectives and make rational plans to choose proper sites for Jatropha biodiesel development and the work reported here should assist that effort. Future research focused on breading high-yield varieties, development of efficient field management systems, and detailed studies lifecycle environmental impacts analysis is required to promote biologically and economically sustainable development of Jatropha biodiesel and to assist government agencies in setting realistic objectives and appropriate and advantageous policies for the regions and the country.

Do oil prices help forecast real GDP?

It has long been argued that changes in the price of oil can help forecast US real GDP growth. This column addresses the common concern among many policymakers that the feedback from oil prices to the economy may become stronger once the price of oil reaches a certain level.

There has been much interest since the 1970s in the question of whether lagged oil price changes help forecast US real GDP growth (Hamilton 2009). This question has taken on new urgency following the large fluctuations in the price of oil in recent years. There is interest not only in the question of possible asymmetries depending on whether the price of oil goes up or down, but also in the idea that increases in the price of oil beyond certain time-varying thresholds may trigger recessions. In a recent study together with Robert Vigfusson, I examine how successful a number of linear and nonlinear models of this type are in reducing the out-of-sample prediction mean-squared error (MSPE) of US real GDP growth (Kilian and Vigfusson 2012).

A useful reference point for this debate is the ability of oil prices to improve on simple univariate autoregressive forecasts of US real GDP growth at horizons up to two years. It can be shown that there are at best small out-of-sample MSPE reductions when forecasting cumulative US real GDP growth from bivariate linear VAR models that include the percent change in the price of oil in addition to real GDP growth. This finding is robust to whether the price of oil is specified in nominal or in real terms and whether the oil price is treated as exogenous or as endogenous with respect to US real GDP. One possible explanation for this result is that the predictive relationship in question is nonlinear. Indeed this possibility has been discussed at length in the existing literature, but the out-of-sample forecasting performance of these nonlinear models has never been evaluated systematically. In fact, suitable econometric models have been developed only very recently.

In this context, Hamilton (2003) made the case that the predictive relationship between oil prices and US real GDP is nonlinear in that (1) oil price increases matter only to the extent that they exceed the maximum oil price in recent years and that (2) oil price decreases do not matter at all. He provided in-sample evidence that including appropriately defined lagged net increases in the price of oil in an autoregression for real GDP growth helps predict US real GDP growth one quarter ahead. This evidence is backed up by our study looking at more recent data (Kilian and Vigfusson 2011). Evidence of in-sample predictability, as documented in these studies, however, need not translate into out-of-sample gains in forecast accuracy, which is the ultimate question of interest to policymakers and applied forecasters.

To resolve this question, it is necessary to evaluate and compare a wide range of out-of-sample forecasting models for US real GDP based on nonlinear transformations of the price of oil that are asymmetric in oil price increases and decreases. A striking result of this comparison is that, among the many alternative asymmetric models that have been suggested in the literature, only a multivariate generalisation of the predictive model proposed by Hamilton (2003) produces systematic MSPE reductions at longer horizons. There is no evidence in support of forecasting models based on the one-year net oil price increase, models based on the uncensored percentage oil price increase, or models based on large percentage increases in the price of oil, in contrast.

The performance of the three-year net increase model in some cases is impressive. For example, based on the three-year net increase in the US refiners? acquisition cost for crude oil imports, the MSPE reductions are between 19% and 26% at the one-year horizon and between 18% and 17% at the two-year horizon. Similar results are obtained with some other oil price series as well. At the one-quarter horizon, however, the results are less clear cut and depend on the precise definition of the oil price variable.

To date much of the perceived empirical success of the three-year net oil price increase specification has been attributed to the fact that this oil price measure is asymmetric, with little attention to the fact that this definition also embodies other nonlinearities. In this regard, it can be shown that reductions in the MSPE at least as large as for the three-year net oil price increase model can be obtained based on an alternative forecasting model that is symmetric in the three-year net oil price increases and decreases. The results for this net oil price change model specification suggest that the asymmetry embodied in the three-year net oil price increase measure is irrelevant for out-of-sample forecasting, if not harmful. This result is consistent with the fact that all other asymmetric specifications considered appear inferior to forecasting models that are symmetric in the price of oil.

The three-year net oil price change model not only tends to be at least as accurate as the corresponding three-year net oil price increase model, but it is more robust to the definition of the oil price variable, more robust across forecast horizons, and more robust to changes in the forecast evaluation period. In short, if there are nonlinearities that matter for forecasting they appear related to how far the current oil price deviates from its most recent extreme values, not to whether the price of oil increased or decreased relative to that threshold. This evidence directly addresses the common concern among many policy makers that the feedback from oil prices to the economy may become stronger once the price of oil passes certain possibly time-varying thresholds. Furthermore, a number of alternative and equally economically plausible symmetric nonlinear specifications (including models that focus on large oil price changes or models that control for time variation in the oil share) cannot replicate the forecasting success of the three-year net oil price change model.

A question of obvious interest is how much of the decline in US real GDP growth during 2008/09 could have been forecast with the help of the three-year net oil price change model. Based on the four-quarter-ahead forecast, further analysis shows that the three-year net oil price change model anticipated about one third of the observed decline in US real GDP in 2008, while linear models essentially failed to predict any decline. These results appear much more plausible than the corresponding forecasts from the three-year net oil price increase model, which imply that virtually all of the 2008 recession could have been forecast one year in advance and that the financial crisis played no role in the 2008 recession. The latter economically implausible result can be traced to over fitting problems in small samples.

In fact, a similar ? if much less severe ? overfitting problem also afflicts to the three-year net oil price change model. The apparent over fitting may be countered with some simple ad hoc adjustments of the model coefficients. With these corrections, the three-year net change model would have forecast only about 15% of the observed cumulative decline in US real GDP in 2008 one year in advance, which is still much larger than the decline implied by linear VAR forecasts, but more in line with other nonlinear symmetric forecasting models.

These results reinforce a growing body of work that has questioned the role of asymmetries in the relationship between the price of oil and the US economy, while drawing attention to a previously undocumented type of threshold nonlinearity in the predictive relationship between the price of oil and US real GDP. The question of how important these threshold effects are deserves further study on extended samples and on other time series. The preliminary findings in this regard discussed here have potentially important implications for applied forecasters, but also for economists interested in modelling the transmission of oil price shocks. For example, there is no theoretical model to date that would rationalise the type of the threshold effects embodied by three-year net oil price change models.

China spacecraft returns to Earth

Astronauts Liu Yang, Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang landed the capsule

A Chinese space capsule carrying three crew members has returned to Earth following a 13-day mission.

Images of the capsule landing in Inner Mongolia at 10:05 local time (02:05 GMT) were shown live on television.

The astronauts, including China's first woman in space, carried out a successful manual docking with the Tiangong-1 laboratory module.

The mission is a key step towards China's goal of building a space station by 2020.

Premier Wen Jiabao hailed the mission as a "complete success".

Analysis

The mission has received blanket coverage in Chinese state media, with the landing of the space capsule in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia carried live on state TV.

Among the astronauts helped out of the acorn-shaped module was a beaming Liu Yang - the country's first female astronaut.

Unknown until a few days before this mission, she now returns to Earth as one of the most recognisable faces in China.

During their time in space, the astronauts carried the country's first manual docking operation in orbit - seen as crucial step if the country is to achieve its goal of building a space station in the next decade. Beijing has also raised the possibility that it may send a man to the moon.

China still lags far behind the space powers of Russia and the US when it comes to technological expertise. But for the moment, money and momentum are on the side of Beijing when it comes to space exploration.

"This is another outstanding contribution by the Chinese people to humanity's efforts to explore and use space," Mr Wen said in Beijing.

"It feels so good to stand on Earth, and it feels even better to be home," astronaut Liu Wang was quoted by national broadcaster CCTV as saying.

"Tiangong-1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We're very proud of our nation," female astronaut Liu Yang said.

Manual docking

The crew of the Shenzhou-9 craft successfully carried out the country's manual docking manoeuvre earlier in the week.

The delicate procedure, which involved bringing together two orbiting vessels travelling at thousands of miles an hour, was mastered by the USSR and US space teams in the 1960s.

The crew also carried out automatic docking of the two crafts during their mission.

The three astronauts returned to the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft on Thursday and performed a manual separation from the space laboratory.

They touched down in Inner Mongolia's Siziwang county, with the capsule deploying a parachute to slow its approach.

All the astronauts were in good health, state-run news agency Xinhua reported. They were shown on CCTV leaving the capsule carried on chairs, smiling as they waved to supporters.

The crew included Jing Haipeng, 45, the mission commander and a veteran astronaut, Liu Yang, 33, and Liu Wang, 43, who performed the manual docking.

Ms Liu, 33, is a major in China's air force from the central province of Henan. On China's Tencent QQ messaging service, she goes by the name "little Flying Knight".

She was recruited into China's space programme only two years ago, but she excelled, the official news agency Xinhua says.

The Shenzhou-9 spacecraft was launched on 16 June.

Maura Henninger, N.D.: A Holistic Approach to Health in Early ...

When it comes to the health of a recovering addict/alcoholic, the approach of natural medicine can positively alter the course of treatment -- and definitively increase chances of getting and staying sober. In the first part of this series, I talked about withdrawal and insomnia, two of the most crucial problems that lead to relapse. I support my patients from several perspectives, encompassing mental, emotional, spiritual and physical. Detoxification, 12-step meetings, group and individual therapy, carefully prescribed medications, and family involvement are all integral to the success of a recovering addict in putting down his drink or drug of choice. But I've also found that the proper diet, along with targeted vitamin supplementation, can work miracles in the lives of early recovering addicts and alcoholics.

The link between sugar and alcoholism is not to be denied. The active alcoholic often typically consumes 50 percent or more of his or her total calories in the form of alcohol. Remaining calories are often in the form of junk foods: empty calories that actually deplete the body's stores of essential nutrients.

Alcohol affects the body's relationship with nutrition in several ways. First, it influences the cells of the midbrain that regulate sensations of appetite by suppressing desire for food while encouraging alcohol intake. [1] Second, it provides a lot of calories without essential nutrients so energy provided is short-lived and leaves the body without proper nutritional stores to draw on. And third, after the initial rush of energy provided by alcohol, there's a severe drop in blood glucose levels that leads to fatigue, depression, and loss of energy and the subsequent consumption of more sugar and refined carbohydrates, as well as caffeine, to swing the body's energy back up. Because of this my patients who are recovering addicts often think they need sugar and caffeine to feel good -- to even feel normal.

I encourage a diet free of sugar and all its forms. This is a departure from average recovery wisdom that tells recovering addicts to eat all the candy and ice cream they want. But this kind of sugar consumption leads to prolonged cravings, fatigue, anxiety, hormonal imbalance, diabetes and simply a new form of dependence. To stabilize blood sugar, I have my patients focus on eating complex carbohydrates that take longer to digest and therefore provide longer and more stable sources of energy with fewer cravings. My prescription is frequent small meals to regulate blood sugar: three moderate meals a day with two sizeable snacks in between.

The diet I endorse is 45 percent carbohydrate, 30 percent fat and 25 percent protein. The best complex carbohydrates grains are: brown and wild rice, oats, amaranth, millet, spelt, beans, and lentils. People often don't think of vegetables and fruits as sources of complex carbohydrates but they are some of the best we have available. All of this fiber helps cut alcohol cravings, as well.

For my patients, I can't stress the importance of protein enough. Proteins helps the body repair tissue and the alcoholic/addict needs this in abundance to help restore organs affected by chronic abuse including the liver, pancreas, kidneys, heart, and brain. Protein is also necessary for blood sugar stabilization. Eggs, lean red meats, chicken, fish, and turkey are all to be eaten in abundance. Nuts are the protein snack of choice among my patients. Proper and adequate intake of fats is essential for absorption of vitamins and nutrients and for cellular repair. Olive oil, flaxseed oil, coconut oil, butter, and avocado are good sources. These oils are vital, too, to provide essential fatty acids. Deficiency of these leads to a host of problems, particularly for the recovering alcoholic, most notably depression. [2]

Because it overstimulates the nervous system causing increased anxiety and insomnia, caffeine consumption is to be minimized if not completely eliminated. I ask my recovering addicts and alcoholics to try herbal coffee substitutes like Pero or Cafix to get the taste fix. If elimination is impossible, I recommend no more than two cups of caffeinated beverages per day. Decaffeinated coffee, which still contains some caffeine, is preferable.

I urge people in recovery to eat nothing artificial to ease the load on the liver, which has to struggle to break down chemicals and preservatives. Foods should be in as close to their natural state as possible. I have found great success in cutting alcohol cravings by eliminating common food allergens, most notably wheat and dairy.

B vitamins are essential during detoxification from alcohol and drugs. Supplementing with vitamin B1 (thiamine) is essential, ensuring proper brain function and decreasing fatigue, brain fog and poor memory. Wernickie-Korsakoff syndrome, or alcoholic encephalopathy, is a pronounced form of thiamin deficiency. [3] Research has shown that vitamin B3, or niacin, helps alcoholics detox from alcohol. [4] Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, helps support adrenal function and also helps rid the body of alcohol. For the recovering alcoholic suffering from insomnia and anxiety, vitamin B6, pyridoxine, is crucial for the production of serotonin and melatonin. Commonly, I give my recovering addicts/alcoholics a high quality B-complex supplement, along with vitamin A and vitamin C, which they are usually deficient in.

It's my goal, as a doctor, to facilitate a physical recovery so that the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of recovery have a better chance of succeeding. Food is a crucial medicine in restoring this balance of health. The sooner a newly-sober person feels great, I've found, the sooner he or she will begin to accept a life free of crippling attachments to substances -- the life they are truly are meant to live.

Let a Professional Auto Repair Service Fix Your Brakes

There are some things that should always be done by a professional. For example, a licensed surgeon should always perform a surgical procedure. An orthodontist should always install braces. A certified professor should always teach high level college courses. Although many people would agree with the aforementioned examples; there are some who don?t have this same thought pattern when it comes to auto repair jobs. In their eyes, a professional isn?t always needed to perform work on vehicles. They believe that auto repair services are overpriced and unnecessary. However, this couldn?t be further from the truth. These businesses are extremely vital and necessary, especially when it comes to fixing brake issues.

One of the main reasons professionals are needed for this specific issue is because of how important brakes are to a vehicle. Just imagine if everyone were driving on the road without brakes. It would be extremely chaotic and dangerous. Now, imagine if you everyone had brakes, but you were the only one on the road with faulty ones. This would be just as dangerous, although it may not affect as many people.

Without properly functioning brakes you would have an increased risk of running into another car. For instance, you could be driving down the road and as you are approaching a red light, you prepare to stop. However, you notice that your brakes aren?t yielding quick enough. Because they aren?t as tight as they should be, you end up bumping into the car in front of you. Although the accident may not result in a tragedy, there?s a good chance that some of the people will have injuries. Not only will this be a bad situation for them, but it would also be one for you as well. That?s because you would probably have to deal with a lawsuit and increased car insurance payments.

Another thing that could end up happening if your brakes aren?t working properly is that you could hit a bike rider or pedestrian by mistake. Because they don?t have the protection that a vehicle provides, the incident would more than likely result in a serious injury or even a fatality.

All of the aforementioned examples show why it?s important to allow a professional auto repair service deal with these types of vehicular issues. If you were to allow an amateur to do the job, there would be a good chance that something could go wrong. Because the brakes are one of the most important parts of a vehicle, it is best to allow an expert to fix it. If not, you could end up living in deep regret.

I didn?t have teh super-awesome photo editing software back in the old days. I hope you like this sweet little cinder cone as much as I do ? she?s a beaut, although not a butte. Ah-ha-ha. Sorry, I couldn?t help myself just there. You know geologists and puns?)

Sunset Crater, a fabulously beautiful cindercone just outside Flagstaff, AZ. I spent much of my childhood learning to love volcanoes here. Photo is taken from a meadow created by lahars from the San Francisco Peaks, a stratovolcano that dominates the view to the southwest. Image courtesy Cujo359.

The winter of 1064-65* wasn?t a particularly good one for the locals. There was the 6 mile fissure that opened and began pumping out lava. Then one end of the fissure started throwing scoria at them, collapsing the roofs of their pit houses under hot heaps of fresh cinders and ash. Then more lava flows filled in forested valleys. By the end of it, fields of corn lay buried, the landscape had undergone a fairly dramatic makeover, and the severely surprised Sinagua had discovered?the art of basalt corn cobble making. They relocated to points less explosive nearby, where a beautiful new volcano formed a backdrop and gave a fertility boost to their fields.

These things happen when you live in the San Francisco Volcanic field.

This digital elevation model (DEM) of the San Francisco Volcanic Field shows many of the more than 600 vents which have erupted in the area during the past 6 million years. Some lava flows (flat lobate features) are easily recognized by their proximity to vents. Larger tectonic structures such as the northeast-trending Mesa Butte Fault and Doney Fault are also seen. Flagstaff lies at the south-central edge of the volcanic field nestled between the base of Elden Mountain and the Observatory Mesa flow emitted from A-1 Mountain. Image courtesy USGS.

Northern Arizona would be a flat, arid plateau if it wasn?t for the hot spot beneath it. For 6 million years, volcanoes have erupted here, steadily marching east. The field extends from Williams in the west to the banks of the Little Colorado River in the east, and from just below Flagstaff in the south nearly to Cameron in the north ? an area of roughly 1,800 square miles. It contains the highest point in Arizona ? 12,633? Humphreys Peak ? as well as the youngest volcano, Sunset Crater. If you?re looking for a particular type of volcano, chances are the San Francisco Volcanic Field has it, from lava domes to a stratovolcano to dozens of cinder cones of all shapes and sizes. With 600+ volcanoes to choose from, you can?t complain. And if you?re really lucky, you might get a chance to see a new volcano born, since the field?s still potentially active. Geologists think any future eruptions will be small enough to get a spectacular show without inconveniencing the locals?too much.

Sunset Crater would have put on quite the show itself. The six mile long?curtain of fireserved as the opening act, and while it probably wasn?t quite as vigorous as many Hawaiian fissure eruptions, brilliant red lava shooting up from the ground is still an impressive sight. But that was merely the prelude. Activity along the fissure slowed quickly, becoming concentrated at the northern end, where the?real?show was starting. Explosions ejected fragments of lava high into the air; as those fragments cooled mid-air, the dissolved gasses within them exsolved and created dozens of vesticles, peppering the fragments with petrified bubbles. They rained down around the vent, piling into a cone. The heat, the smell, and the noise would have been overwhelming.

We have a good idea what the Sinagua saw. It would have been quite a bit like Paricut?n?s birth:

Loud, isn?t it? One begins to understand why the Sinagua fed it corn: I imagine they were trying desperately to calm it down.

If they found a good vantage point on nearby mountains, they might have seen bits of the newly-birthed crater rafting away on lava flows. You can still see chunks of?red oxidized agglutinate, pieces of the original cone, trapped in the Bonito flow.

Red oxidized agglutinate in the Bonito Lava Flow, Sunset Crater, AZ. Image courtesy Cujo359.

The explosions continued, filling Sunset Crater?s gaping wounds with fresh scoria, and leaving the volcano with smooth, unblemished flanks.

As the eruption waned, something wonderful happened. Fumaroles formed near the crater?s rim, venting hot gasses that oxidized the basalt scoria. The iron contained within basically rusted, painting the rim in gorgeous sunset colors. The fumaroles cemented the rim with?silica,?gypsum and iron oxide; as a finishing touch, they deposited?sulfur compounds,?opal,?hematite,?jarosite, and?magnetite. Nature had created a masterpiece.

When all was said and done, the volcano topped out at 1000 feet in height, a mile in width, and contained a crater 400 feet deep, which itself hosts a 160 foot deep secondary crater. The local Sinagua might have considered it a decent consolation prize for getting volcanically evicted from their forested valley.

The visible?interior of Sunset Crater is covered with a smooth coating of scoria, but we can get a look inside her if we head over to Red Mountain, many miles to the west.

Red Mountain cinder cone, near Flagstaff, AZ. Check out that interior! Image courtesy Cujo359.

This is the eroded interior of a cinder cone. Steam and percolating water welded its layers of cinder and ash together with the same sorts of mineral oxides that cemented Sunset Crater, creating a volcanic material called?tuff. We get this inside-look at the anatomy of a cinder cone because the entire western side of Red Mountain got itself rafted away by a lava flow, leaving an enormous ampitheater carved out of the cone. This time, there was wasn?t any explosive action to replace the missing bits.

Lava can do some pretty outrageous things. And thanks to Northern Arizona?s cool, dry climate, we can get a nearly unweathered view of its antics. Rain and snowmelt just sink right in without disturbing the surface of the flows too much. If it wasn?t for the lichens and hardy bushes peppering the flows, you?d think they?d just erupted last week.

The Bonito Lava Flow, Sunset Crater, AZ.

Most of the flows around Sunset Crater are composed of a?a lava. There is a good reason why the Hawaiians call it a?a, which means, basically, ?stony, rough lava.? It?s a stony, rough lava comprised of clinker, broken chunks of lava carried along the top by a dense, pasty core. As?that hotter core oozes its way downslope, the clinker goes along for the ride, tumbling over the leading edge like a bunch of over-excited kids at a slow-motion water park. The tumbled chunks get buried as the flow ambles on. Thus, you get a sort of lava sandwich: clinker top and bottom, paste in the middle. Don?t bite into a fresh flow, though: it?s erupting at temperatures of 1000-1100 degrees C. That?s 1800-2000 degrees F. That?s bloody?hot.

Back when I was a wee kiddie, our teachers showed us a video of an a?a flow filmed in Iceland. I?ll never forget the sound. As the clinker tumbles, it makes a cacophony like a monstrous china cabinet getting knocked over. This video from Hawaii demonstrates that nicely:

?

Is that, or is that not, simply awesome?

There are two ways a?a is formed from a basalt flow. One of them is when the basalt is high in gas bubbles and (relatively) low in temperature, thus high in viscosity. The other is when the strain rate of the flow is high ? such as when it hits steep ground. Remember this, as it will factor in to the following discussion.

Sunset Crater?s lava flows weren?t limited to a?a. The Bonito flow began close to the western margin of the volcano as pahoehoe, a Hawaiian word meaning ?smooth, unbroken lava.? It?s a far more liquid basalt that forms a beautiful, smooth surface, sculpted into undulating billows or ropy loops. It forms that way because of the way very fluid lava moves under a congealing surface crust. It?s hot stuff, 1100-1200 degrees C (2000-2100 degrees F), with a low gas bubble content.

Now, the interesting thing is this: pahoehoe can easily turn to a?a, depending on how the flow goes. If pahoehoe hits an uphill climb, it?ll cool down, slow down, and get all clinkered up. Same thing can happen as the flow cools further from its eruption site. Isn?t that neat?

You can get an idea of what something like that looks like from this video of pahoehoe and a?a flows merging:

Pahoehoe also means ?good to walk? in Hawaiian. When I was a kid visiting the Crater, our field trip guide explained the name origins thusly: the Hawaiians, walking barefoot over flows, would try to tiptoe over the rough stuff, exclaiming: ?Ah! Ah!? And then, when their feet hit the smooth, soothing surface, they?d sigh in relief: ?Mmmm, pahoehoe!?

You?ll never forget the difference now, will you?

The Bonito flow turned from pahoehoe to a?a as it lost its gas on the trip out from the mountain. Big cracks formed in its surface from the frictional drag of the liquid lava below the cooler crust, and as that weak crust collapsed when lava drained away from beneath it. It?s the youngest and biggest of Sunset Crater?s two flows. It covers almost two square miles, and ranges from 100 feet deep in its center to less than 6 feet along the margins. It filled in a basin surrounded by older volcanoes. The other major flow, Kana?a, flowed down an old stream bed for several miles, and never got more than 1000 feet wide. Sunset Crater?s continued eruptions covered it in cinders, allowing a lot more vegetation to take root along its surface. Both flows, as well as the cinders, are alkai olivine basalt, which is composed of microscopic crystals of?plagioclase,?olivine and?augite. The occasional big white chunk of stone embedded in the basalt is a?xenolith, in this case formed when lava ripped a hunk of Kaibab limestone out of the underlying formations and took it along for the ride.

Crack in the Bonito Flow. This stuff's rough!

The Bonito lava flow is where you?ll see most of the interesting formations. For a crash course in lava, there?s nothing better than the trail that meanders through it. You can take?an online field trip, but we?ll hit some of the high points here.

A squeeze-up in the Bonito Lava Flow. Image courtesy Cujo359.

If you?ve never used ?lava? and ?toothpaste? in the same sentence before, that?s probably because you?ve never seen a squeeze-up. These form when gummy, partially-cooled lava squeezes its way through already-hardened cracks in the flow. It?s pretty much the consistency of toothpaste. A close inspection will show you the marks left as it scrapes by the solid stone around it.

Lava from the Bonito Flow displaying the tell-tale grooves from being squeezed up like so much toothpaste.

The Bonito flow also contains lava tubes, formed when molten rock drained from its solidified surroundings. Those tubes are cold ? basalt?s a terrible material for trapping heat. In colder, wetter Arizona days, the tubes used to contain ice full time. Now, they?re usually dry, but frigid. Alas, Bonito?s main tube collapsed some time ago, so you can?t go exploring it anymore. This is good news for the claustrophobic set, not such good news for the spelunkers among us.

You can console yourself with a hornito.

A hornito on the Bonito Lava Flow. Image courtesy Cujo359.

Yes, I know most of you associate the word ?hornito? with tequila, for good reason ? Hornitos is an excellent brand. In this case, though, hornito means a small spatter cone formed on the surface of a basalt flow. It?s created when lava is forced up through the cooled surface. Hornitos are fed by the flow itself, rather than its own magma source as is the case with a regular spatter cone. They?re steep-sided heaps of splattered lava that splashed down and over the developing cone, welding itself as it goes. The lava?s still partially liquid when it falls, which is why it doesn?t form distinct cinders, although the principle?s roughly the same.

Watching one form is a fascinating experience:

Sunset Crater?s hornito used to be taller, but volcanoes aren?t all that good at welding, and people broke it down by sitting on it and taking away chunks. It?s still an impressive feature, though.

Just past the hornito, you?ll catch sight of something that looks like a mini-cinder cone. It?s a cinder dune. This gives you some idea of just how much material Sunset Crater ejected.

Cinder dune at Sunset Crater. Image courtesy Cujo359.

Sunset Crater is a geologists? dream. There are few places in the continental United States where volcanism is so wonderfully demonstrated, without all the pesky plants in the way. And, just over the horizon, ancient oceans lie exposed, and prehistoric apartments look out over Painted Desert vistas.

But that?s a story for another Sunday Sensational Science. For now, I?ll just leave you with a portrait of Sunset Crater and her lava flows, and let you ponder the power of hot rock to create a work of art:

Sunset Crater, seen from the trail through the Bonito Lava Flow.

Vizio's Google TV box emerges as the Co-Star Stream Player, goes up for pre-order in July with OnLive gaming

Vizio Co-Star hands-on

Remember the Vizio VAP430 Stream Player that we tried during CES? Half a year later, the Google TV hub is getting full launch details, just in time for Google I/O. Along with receiving the much more elegant title of Co-Star Stream Player, the set-top box now bakes in OnLive streaming game support -- the Co-Star could, in theory, replace a game console for any American with a good broadband connection. Whether or not playing Just Cause 2 on a TV is in the cards, the hub ticks all the 2012 Google TV checkboxes, including a hybrid keyboard and remote, 3D-capable 1080p video and DLNA media sharing. Before you rush to the local big-box store to pick one up, be warned that pre-orders don't start until July, and then only on Vizio's website. The $100 price, however, will make it considerably easier to wait.

Alternative Health Information Blog: Neck Pain Treated With ...

It is predicted that six in ten people in today's society endure neck pain. It should come as no surprise that neck pain is among one of the most common conditions that is treated in Chiropractic offices today. I am asked, on a daily basis, the reason this discomfort occurs. In the majority of cases, neck pain can be directly linked with unsatisfactory posture. When you consider the reality that the individual head weighs almost the same as a bowling ball between eight and twelve pounds and you pair that pressure with the posture shown by the majority of people you will get the formula for an epidemic of constant neck pain. Think about trying to hold up a bowling ball having your arms extended directly out before you. How long can you support the ball there? Unless you are a body builder your arms are likely to give way after only a few split seconds losing the ball to your side. Now, consider this formula as your posture after putting in many hours at a desk bending forward to read a computer screen. This poor posture is going to leave your neck feeling 'tight' or in spasm which will result in your pain. At this point you have two choices, endure through the pain or get help and return to a life without pain.

Chiropractic treatment that focuses on spinal correction is paramount in the treatment of chronic neck pain. The concept of spinal correction is not necessarily a unique one; offices that focus on this form of chiropractic produce drastic and long lasting results in patients suffering from neck pain. Focusing on spinal correction lets us initially, concentrate on the current complication of neck pain reeducating your spine to its perfect position to minimize your pain. This, nonetheless, is not the only benefit. Inadequate posture induces the bones and soft tissue to remodel as the body takes its best shot to stabilize itself in its current position. An example of this is the 'prominence' found at the base of the neck in lots of elderly patients with poor posture. This remodeling often affects or invades the space of surrounding nerves creating a large number of symptoms, not only in the neck, but all the way down the arms as well. With our Spinal Correction Therapy, we have produced a decrease in the strong possibility of women forming the 'prominence' at the bottom of their necks as they age.

Soft tissue care is also utilized in the treatment of patients suffering from neck pain. Muscle stimulation is used to relax muscle spasms and boost blood flow to the managed area; ultra sound is used for its deep heating influences and to lead to cellular repair. In addition there are two specific muscle techniques that can be implemented to help these patients which are Muscle Alignment Technique (MAT) and Active Release Technique.

Muscle alignment technique manages groups of muscles that collaborate. To appreciate the process of how this is accomplished, I must first describe a little about how a muscle functions. Put simply, muscles perform through contractions or getting shorter. For a muscle to stretch, an opposing muscle needs to pull on it. This cooperation between resisting muscle groups is synchronized by our nerves. It falls to them to choose how much stress each muscle requires in order for the entire system to continue to work properly. MAT uses eccentric muscle contraction maneuvers to stop the nervous system from totally resetting a muscle or muscle teams back to the symptomatic chronic tension state.

There is also a cutting edge soft tissue therapy known as Active Release Technique (ART). ART is a soft tissue therapy created for and used by world-class athletes that has been shown to work great on every patient. What sets me apart, as a ART practitioner, from other healthcare providers is the specificity in caring for the underling muscles. To illustrate how this works, I must first explain a neck injury in a little more detail.

Spasmed muscles from poor posture are categorized as a constant tension injury. Essentially what is taking place is the tight muscle is likely to lead to a reduction in circulation to the affected area leading to calcium retention and bringing on compromised muscle cells in this area. The body deals with these compromised muscles by forming adhesions. In other words, the body will secure the harmed muscles to other tissue in the area. These bonds can be compared to an athlete's sprained finger wrapped to another finger to strengthen it. These adhesions will in turn reduce the range of neck movement making it challenging to swivel the head. The key to addressing these injuries is the specificity that ART therapies offer. Every ART practitioner is trained to review each muscle to establish the exact area of the underlying trouble. This examination results in a particular treatment for the muscle that has been affected.

The use of Spinal Correction Therapy to realign the spine, Muscle Alignment Technique to help lower chronic tension and Active Release Technique to break down particular adhesions can yielded terrific results. What I hope this helps you understand is suffering with chronic neck pain does not need to be long lasting, this chronic injury can become just a bad memory with chiropractic treatment.

My name is Dr. Kristopher Adolph I am board certified and a state licensed Doctor of Chiropractic.
A transplant to the Pittsburgh area from the Midwest, I am a graduate of The University of Kansas and Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City.
I have extensive training in manual adjusting, and activator adjusting, as well as certification in active release technique. Active release technique or ART is a cutting edge soft tissue technique used to break down adhesions in muscles and surrounding soft tissues enabling the patient to regain a much higher range of motion and over all function following an injury.
There is an old saying that has always stuck with me. "Chiropractic adds years to your life and life to those years." If you are experiencing pain or having mobility issues, call to schedule an appointment as soon as possible, so I can address your issues and start you on your way to better health.

Real Estate Excellence Academy: Property Management Training ...

Part of Chapter 3 of PME - Property Management Excellence Training and Procedures Manual
www.realestateexcellence.com.au 3.3.13 Pool safety certificate
The Queensland Government introduced new pool safety laws in December 1 2009. This means that if a property with a pool or spa is rented or sold prior to December 1 2015, a Pool Safety Certificate must be obtained. A rental property (house) with a pool cannot be rented without a certificate. Shared pool obligations are outlined below.? In addition, all pools and spas in Queensland (regardless if a rental property) must be registered on the state government pool register ? to ensure a pool or spa is registered, visit www.dlgp.qld.gov.au Non-shared pools ? Houses -? If a pool is only accessible to residents of one dwelling such as a private house or private spa on a unit balcony, it is a non-shared pool. Before entering into a new or renewed lease for a property with a non-shared pool, there must be a pool safety certificate is in effect for the pool. (Form 23 under the Building Act)
Shared Pools ? Units -?? If residents of two or more dwellings can use a pool, such as a body corporate pool, it is a shared pool.? For shared pools, the owner or the body corporate must complete a Form 36 Notice of No Pool Safety Certificate. Form 36 must be given to the tenant. (after December 1 2012, a Pool Safety Certificate must be in place and the Form 36 should no longer be used for rental properties).
Until December 1 2012, property managers must give a Notice of no pool safety certificate - Form 36 to the person who will be the tenant, to the body corporate and to the department before entering into the lease for shared pools that do not yet have a Pool Safety Certificate. The Notice of no pool safety certificate - Form 36 advises that the pool may not comply and the steps that must be taken to comply. The Form 36 should not be used in Property Management after the 1st December 2012.
However, for leases entered into on or before 1 September 2012, a phase in period applies - the pool owner has until 30 November 2012 to obtain a pool safety certificate for the pool. If a new or renewed lease is entered into on or after 2 September 2012, the pool owner must obtain a pool safety certificate within 90 days of entering into the lease.
From December 1 2012, all rental properties must have a pool safety certificate in place for both units and houses. Property managers are not to rent properties that do not have a pool safety certificate and are to advise the licensee or senior manager immediately if there are any concerns relating to this matter.
Validity of pool safety certificates
Pool safety certificates are valid for two years from the date of issue for non-shared pools, and one year for shared pools. ?Systems are to be put in the software programme or other preferred programme to flag when pool safety certificates are expiring.
To ensure pool safety certificates remain effective, property managers should check the pool register each time a tenancy commences or a tenancy is renewed. Visit www.dlgp.qld.gov.au and follow the links to the pool safety register.
For more information about Pool Safety Law refers to Chapter 37 of PME ? Pool Safety Laws for sales and rental property. (C) www.realestateexcellence.com.au - for more information about PME, visit the website

Cash Rules at Romney Retreat While Condoleezza Rice Steals the Show

PARK CITY, Utah - If the majority of donors who attend this weekend's gathering of hundreds of high dollar fundraisers go back home as fired up as Rodger Young, the Romney campaign will be in quite strong a financial position and the investment in time and effort for the event will be paid back many times over.

"I am going to bundle every penny I can bundle," said Young, a donor at this weekend's mixer for Romney donors, GOP stars, and Republican leaders.

Until this weekend, Young was merely a donor not a bundler, but that has now changed.

"I came here with the idea that we were all going to take on more financial responsibility and I am certainly prepared to do that for Gov. Romney and I think we can get this done," Young told ABC News.

Hundreds of high dollar fundraisers turned out this weekend for a mixer for Romney campaign donors, GOP stars and Republican leaders, but among the faces at the retreat were other attendees who have the same goals of defeating Barack Obama, but whose roles in Republican politics lie in super PACs.

A man in a dark suit and purple pocket square was camped out in the lobby of the Chateaux at Silver Lake talking to what appeared to be lanyard-wearing donors. The man was Charlie Spies, the founder of the Mitt Romney-backing super PAC Restore Our Future.

He wasn't attending any of the panels or discussions and didn't even want to go into get a cup of coffee, but the lobby is really the place to be, with attendees walking to and from meetings or gathering to talk.

Reporters were asked to leave the lobby after being spotted chatting with Sen. John Thune and his wife about Friday's reception at Olympic Park, as well as with Florida Rep. Connie Mack.

It's legal for Spies to be there, but "coordination" with the candidate is not, a rule that's hard to enforce and explain.

He pleasantly wouldn't answer questions about the propriety of him hobnobbing at the Romney Victory Leadership Retreat, but he said, "Romney supporters are energized."

"People here understand that the private sector is not doing fine and we need a president who understands how to create jobs and turn the economy around," Spies told ABC News.

The Romney campaign did not immediately respond to an evening request for comment about ROF staff being at the retreat.

But Spies wasn't the only person affiliated with a GOP superPAC attending the confab.

Karl Rove, founder of American Crossroads and a former Bush strategist, was also on hand. He spoke on a "media insight" panel, and on another one examining Romney's path to victory. Rove, dressed in a blue blazer, told reporters his panel was "damn good," before whizzing away on a golf cart.

Attendees said the panel was engaging and humorous, with Rove swearing up a storm and regaling the crowd with funny stories.

Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz told reporters both Rove and GOP strategist Mary Matalin were making the crowd howl, telling them about when Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a friend with bird-shot pellets on a hunting trip.

"He was on full display," Chaffetz said of Rove.

It wasn't all joking, though. According to Young and his wife, Rove said, "We had to focus on some particular groups, such as some Republicans that didn't vote in the last election," including focusing on women. It's unclear whether Rove was also soliciting donations as he mingled with attendees over the weekend.

Many of those same attendees said the star speaker of the weekend was former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who received and a standing ovation. Ambassador Charles Cobb, who served as ambassador to Iceland from 1989 to 1992, said Rice was "spectacular" and described her as a "very bright, sophisticated, articulate lady."

Husband-and-wife donors from Los Angeles who did not want to be identified said Rice's message was one of "America needing to take charge."

"We can't stand by and let things happen," the wife said. "If we do, someone else will take that leadership role."

They both described her address as an "impassioned plea" for the country to "stand up and take charge."

Donor Kent Lucken, an international banker in Boston who moved back to his home state of Iowa for six weeks before the caucuses to help Romney, said "she rocked it."

Attendees also heard from Sen. John McCain, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and many other GOP notables. The donors were also able to learn about what Chaffetz described as how "the Romney train runs on time."

The attendees got to hear from the Romney senior staff, including campaign manager Matt Rhoades, senior strategist Stuart Stevens, and longtime adviser Beth Myers who is heading up the vice presidential selection process. They described the campaign's "10 a.m. meeting," according to Chaffetz and several donors.

"I think people were fascinated by that," Chaffetz said. "They spent a good half hour showing them how they would do that, and what they would talk about and how they review the numbers and talk about messaging and develop that into a cohesive message that's not only earned media but also paid media and other types of things. That was really different than I think that most people thought."

Chaffetz added that they went through "the analysis of what's going on in the media, looking at polling, looking at all the different facets."

Another thing many attendees weren't expecting? How up-close and personal they would get with many of the stars of the party. Chaffetz pointed out that he saw many donors excitedly taking their photo with possible vice presidential choices.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, South Dakota Sen. John Thune, and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan were all on hand.

Larry Conti who came with his friend, a bundler from Los Angeles, as his plus-one describes himself as "a big Paul Ryan fan" and was thrilled to meet him. Conti thought he would impress his friend when he took a photo with Ryan, who introduced himself to him as "Paul," but instead the friend told him he had just spent 10 minutes talking to Ryan in the bathroom.

Eugene Atkinson, a bundler from New York City, said he thanked House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and turned away only to have Cantor come back to him and ask him, "So how many years were you at Goldman Sachs?"

Atkinson spent almost 20 years at the bank (he is now the founder and managing director of Atkinson Capital), and Cantor's wife used to work there.

And it's also what these donors are leaving with, not just an enthusiasm to raise more money, as Young mentioned, but the impression that their guy is going to win.

Before he zoomed off in a golf cart with former Secretary of State James Baker, former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, who will also head up Romney's transition if he is elected, said he came away from the panels with confidence that the Romney campaign has "a very impressive group of people supporting this campaign and we have a very good shot at winning."

But with just under four months to go until election day, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus acted as a voice of reason for a campaign that is currently on top of the world.

"Everyone thinks we couldn't be doing better. We are clicking on all cylinders. We couldn't be raising more money, but it's June," Priebus said. "On our best day it will be close."
